Inflammation is one of the visible signs of the body reacting to infection, irritation or injury. When inflammation is caused by infection, measuring CRP levels will help to establish if the cause is bacterial or viral. This can help with appropriate prescribing of antibiotics and reduce further visits to the surgery.

Why should I test for CRP?

Febrile patients are the major beneficiaries of CRP testing in a primary healthcare setting. Particularly those with acute, infectious diseases.

For their benefit and yours, CRP testing can definitively prove or disprove whether antibiotics are required. Patients may automatically assume that they will help, but that’s not always true. In fact, in the case of a viral infection, administering antibiotics will only serve to increase antibiotic resistance – while leaving the infection untouched.

Patient reassurance is paramount. Just by measuring the level of CRP you can differentiate between bacterial and viral infections and prescribe accordingly. If it’s bacterial, antibiotics may help. And if it’s viral, you can avoid any unnecessary and ineffectual treatment. (And in the process, reduce further visits to surgery.)

Reliable, on-the-spot CRP determinations are invaluable in both diagnostic and follow-up situations.
