Sometimes called an 'acute phase protein', C Reactive Protein (CRP) is a general marker of infection and inflammation. And because the level of CRP increases in certain diseases that cause inflammation, particularly bacterial infections, it’s an invaluable early warning.
We can easily measure CRP in a simple blood sample. And with levels liable to increase up to 1000 times in the acute phase (as a response to an inflammatory stimulus), it’s not hard to spot.
